
A Better Way to Dry MEMS Sensor Wafers
If you’ve ever dealt with MEMS sensor wafers, you know the struggle. You need the water gone—fast—but you can’t afford water marks or the kind of thermal stress that ruins a batch. For a long time, the go-to was convection ovens. But honestly? They’re a waste. You end up heating the entire chamber just to dry a few wafers. It’s slow, it’s expensive, and it doesn’t exactly fit into the “green factory” goals we’re all chasing these days. That’s why we switched to short-wave infrared (IR) lamps. Instead of heating the air, we hit the wafer surface directly.
Why the Physics Actually Matters
We set these IR systems up for high power density. The goal is a fast ramp-up. Here is the trick: the IR radiation goes straight into the water molecules on the wafer. It doesn’t linger in the air or soak into the machine frame. It’s efficient. It’s clean. And it makes your cycle times move a lot faster.
The Nitty-Gritty on Gear
We use high-purity quartz tubes for the lamps. In semiconductor fab, any kind of contamination is a nightmare, so we don’t take chances here. Depending on how big your wafers are or what kind of heat profile you need, we can tweak the coatings on the lamps. This helps the heat get into the MEMS structures without cooking the edges of the wafer. A quick word on the wiring: we stick to standard industrial connectors. They’re sturdy and won’t rattle loose when the machines are humming. **One heads-up if you’re swapping these into an old line:**check your voltage. These IR arrays pull a lot of current. If your power supply isn’t ready for that initial surge, you’re going to trip a breaker.
The Trade-off
Now, IR drying is fast, but it’s intense. You’re dealing with a lot of localized heat. You have to find the sweet spot between how hot the lamps are and how fast the wafers are moving. If your conveyor lags for even a second, you risk melting those delicate sensor membranes. To keep from scrapping a whole batch, we suggest using real-time pyrometer feedback. It lets you modulate the power on the fly, so you can sleep a little easier knowing the wafers are safe.
