
Stop Freezing in the Changing Room
Let’s be honest: Workshop changing rooms are usually freezing. They’re drafty, oversized, and trying to heat them with standard forced-air systems is like trying to fill a bucket with a hole in the bottom. You spend a fortune heating the air, but the air just drifts away. That’s why we use ceiling-mounted infrared (IR) heaters. Instead of fighting the wind, these units just ignore the air entirely. They beam heat straight down to the people and the floor. It’s basically like stepping into sunlight. You don’t have to wait twenty minutes for the room to “warm up” while you’re shivering in your boots. The second you flip the switch, you feel it. The heat hits you instantly because it’s traveling as radiation, not as a breeze. It’s fast. Really fast. When we’re setting these up in shops with high ceilings, we go with high-wattage arrays. We keep them up high so they don’t get knocked around by equipment or bumped into by people rushing to get changed. But you can’t just slap them anywhere. You’ve got to do a bit of math on the BTUs based on how high your ceiling is. If the heater is way up there, you’ll need a focused reflector, otherwise, the heat just scatters before it ever reaches the ground. There are a couple of things to watch out for, though. Here’s the thing: infrared heat creates “shadows.” If someone is standing behind a tall locker or a big piece of machinery, they’re going to be cold. The heat can’t curve around corners. You have to be smart about where you place the units so you don’t end up with random ice boxes in the middle of the room. And one last tip? Check your ceiling materials. These lamps get hot—really hot. Make sure your panels can take the heat so you don’t end up with scorched marks on your ceiling.
