
Getting Your Heat Right in Smart Fab Gloveboxes
If you’re building out a Smart Fab for Industry 4.0, you’ve probably realized that old-school convective heating is just too slow. It’s a drag on your timeline. That’s why we lean on infrared (IR) heating for gloveboxes. Instead of wasting time trying to heat up the inert gas filling the box, IR goes straight for the workpiece. It’s direct. It’s efficient. It just works.
Dialing in the Heat
We design these IR elements to fit your specific footprint. By tweaking the wattage and voltage, we can get the heat density exactly where it needs to be. If you need to ramp up temperatures fast to keep your production cycles moving, high-wattage is the way to go. You can hook these right into a PLC-controlled PID loop. This keeps your temperatures locked in tight. Because the response time is so snappy, there’s almost no lag between the sensor picking up a dip and the heater kicking back in.
The Hardware Stuff
We usually go with quartz envelopes, but we use different coatings to change how the heat hits. Short-wave IR is great when you need the heat to soak deep into the material. Long-wave? That’s your go-to for surface heating. One thing people overlook is the connector. Whether you use a standard R7s or a heavy-duty industrial pin, it matters. These things expand and vibrate. If your connection is sloppy, you’ll deal with arcing and your elements will burn out way sooner than they should.Don’t cut corners here.
The Trade-off
Going digital with your IR system gives you some great perks. You get a clear picture of your thermal mapping and you know exactly how much energy you’re using in real-time. But here’s the thing: high-density IR puts out a lot of localized heat. If your cooling jacket isn’t up to the task, that heat has to go somewhere. It can creep into your seals or fry your electronics. You’ve got to find that sweet spot between how much heat you’re pumping in and how much your fab can actually push out. Otherwise, you’re looking at a thermal runaway situation, and nobody wants that.
